Scuba Diving in Cenotes
Yucatan is noted for its famous spectacular formations and the amazing clarity of the water. The cenotes, freshwater caves formed by runoff through the limestone shelf of the Yucatan are located in the Playa del Carmen-Tulum area on the south of Cancun. A good number of the cenotes are entry points of large networks of underground rivers, big caves with magnificent formations of stalagmites and stalactites in the limestone. In the Jungles nearby the ancient city of Tulum lie the 2 longest underwater cave systems known on earth. Creatures found nowhere else on the planet have been discovered in these caves.
Maximum depth of dives in the cenotes is 14m. In there we often observe the halocline phenomenon (separation of fresh water from salt one), which provides us with an unforgettable visual experience. Diving in the cenotes is under the supervision of a certified local cave guide (1 guide to 4 divers). Water temperature is around 24 deg C.

These are some of the best dives you will do. Cenotes have been considered sacred amongst many indigenous nations in Central America. It was believed that these natural sinkholes and underwater rivers are gates to the 9 level maya underworld as the pyramids to the 13 level celestial world. All in all, the formations of the caves, the effect of the sun rays and something mystical attached to these caves will make it a highly recommended diving experience.
